I hear a groan that feels far away, and it takes me a minute to realize that the groan was mine. I taste blood and something else … grass? I flutter my eyes open to see a golden haze and several tall, bell-shaped figures above me. As my eyes focus, and my ears decide to work, I hear them.

“She’s waking up!” cries one.

“I told you the crystals would work—”

“Shh,” comes a voice I … recognize. It sounds so familiar. My eyes search for the source, but all I see are a dozen strangers’ faces peering down at me like some kind of science experiment.

A pseudoscience experiment.

I’m in a huge room, familiar, filled with golden light. The ceiling must be forty feet high. It looks like … wait … the mansion. I’m in the front hall! I’m still in this nightmare.

And then all the memories come flooding back. The pipe, the staff hallway, the vents, the Greenium.

The Greenium. They’re gonna make me drink that crazy shit!

I wiggle my hands and arms and realize … they don’t even have me tied up! I bolt out of the chair and dart past all of them.

“Let me the fuck out of here, you sickos!” I scream, just knowing I’ll find the door locked. But then, once I grab the knob and turn, the door …

Eases open?

It’s open! Just like that! And then I remember.

“Where is my sister?” I demand, turning to find them all standing there, ball gowns of every color and shape, faces grinning, eyes sparkling wildly like they think they’ve already won. “Where is she?” I gasp.

My she came out as thee.

I reach up, feel my lips. Am … am I imagining things or … is that a tingling I feel?

I drag my tongue against my upper teeth and feel … nothing.

Oh shit.

“Where’s my EpiPen?” I demand. When nobody moves, I dive for the first girl I see, a girl even shorter than me in a forest-green sheath dress with her red hair in an updo, and I shake her.

“Where is it? If I don’t get that EpiPen, I’m going to die!”

The girl says nothing, just stares up at me with huge, scared blue eyes, her hands around my wrists.

Nobody says anything. Nobody moves to help her.

“Where the fuck is it!” I holler down at her, my grip tightening, her eyes shutting against me.

The only sound in the room is my heaving breathing. I look around at them all staring at me like I’m an animal in a cage. What the hell are they all waiting for?

“You think this smoothie is gonna turn me into a Disney princess?” I ask them. The girl’s hands come up around mine, not desperately, but gently, like an afterthought. “You think this shit is going to make me like you all? What makes you think I want to be like you?”

I try to chill and take a deep breath.

Calm down, Synthie; panicking won’t help.

But before I can launch into this concoction being a bunch
